Attorney General Kris Mayes last week issued cease-and-desist letters to four Tucson apartment complexes to address their poor living conditions.

According to the letters, the conditions at these properties include mold growth, exposure to asbestos and lack of air conditioning. In a statement, Mayes says her “office will not hesitate to take legal action against landlords who put profits over people.”

The cease-and-desist letter also mentions potential violations of the Arizona Residential Landlord and Tenant Act, and deceptive advertising under the Arizona Consumer Fraud Act.

Richie Taylor is a spokesperson with the attorney general’s office.

“The AG’s Office will continue to investigate this matter and Attorney General Mayes is certainly prepared to take legal action if necessary to protect the tenants in these buildings," she said.

Taylor says the landlords claim some issues have been resolved, but have not provided documentation to prove it.
