Federal workers will miss a paycheck. Phoenix nonprofit is bracing for increased demand

Some federal workers are expected to miss out on a paycheck this week as the government shutdown continues. One Phoenix charitable organization is preparing for increased demand.

During the last government shutdown, in 2019, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul helped 57 families of federal workers in Arizona cover costs for rent and utilities.

The organization so far has not seen that demand during this shutdown. But St. Vincent de Paul Chief Program Officer Jessica Berg expects the need will spike toward the end of next week, when rent will come due for many people.

“The thing about the shutdown last time, and what we’re anticipating again, is there are folks who have really never been in this situation before to have to ask for help,” Berg said.

Berg said, on average, her organization spends about $1,300 to assist families with rent or utilities. But she said that can prevent someone from becoming homeless, which can cost communities tens of thousands per year for supportive services.

The organization this month launched a food drive and fundraiser, in anticipation of growing need.

“There are so many ways that folks can get involved through donations or food drives or volunteering their time,” Berg said.
