Arizona Republican Chair Gina Swoboda announced Saturday she plans to step down from her leadership role following the GOP’s annual meeting in January.
The announcement comes after Swoboda’s decision to run in Arizona’s 1st Congressional District race.
In her social media statement, Swoboda says her decision came “[u]pon consideration of all the factors and in spite of the support” she received.

Swoboda was elected last year as chair of the Arizona Republican Party for a two-year term. However, no party rule required her to step down. Before her announcement to step down, she previously said that the party’s state committee should make the decision to hold a special election to replace her.
Some other party members had previously expressed that Swoboda should resign from her position before the January meeting.
