Sen. Mark Kelly is calling out President Donald Trump and other Republicans for not taking the incitement of political violence more seriously. This is after Trump called for the death penalty against Kelly and other Democrats last week.

Six congressional Democrats, including Kelly, released a video last week urging military and intelligence officials to not carry out illegal orders — in what he calls a reiteration of the rule of law. Trump initially responded by alleging sedition, punishable by death. Speaking on CBS’ "Face the Nation," Kelly said:

“As the husband of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, I understand what political violence is," Kelly said. "The President should as well. Just like Gabby, somebody tried to assassinate him and he should understand that his words could have serious serious consequences.”

Giffords was shot and critically hurt during an assassination attempt in 2011. Kelly called out Republicans he says are being silent.

“We’ve heard very little, basically crickets, from Republicans in the United States Congress about what the President has said about hanging members of Congress," Kelly said.

The White House later said Trump does not actually want to see members of Congress executed.
