Peoria has paved the way for a controversial apartment complex to move forward through a zoning change this week.
The planned Cibola Vista Resort Residences project would bring in 300 apartments to an area largely occupied by single family homes.
Residents at the Tuesday meeting spoke of worries that the complex might drive down home values. Some even warned of referendum votes to remove sitting council members if they approved the motion.
Despite the vocal opposition, the council voted to push the plan forward. Peoria Mayor Jason Beck equated some of the comments he heard to NIMBYism.
“It it's it's crazy to me. I don't understand where we kind of got away from actually trying to look out for the community. And I realize lots of people spend a lot of money on homes," Beck said.
The 17-acre property sits on the corner of Lake Pleasant Parkway and Pinnacle Vista Drive.
