Artificial ontelligence will be a larger focus in the Arizona Legislature moving forward with the addition of a new House committee.

Explosive growth in AI has brought jobs and innovation to Arizona, but also concerns. The Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Committee will help shape Arizona policy on the rapidly changing technology.

Rep. Justin Wilmeth will chair the committee. He said AI is here to stay and the Legislature is taking it seriously.

“AI is another industrial revolution, but it's like a four- or eight-year clip where we're going to look back in five or 10 years, and our society is going to be wholly different because of these technological advances,” Wilmeth said.

Wilmeth said the committee will answer the question of how Arizona can stay ahead of AI and harness it.

“This is something that I think that the house can use as a device to help the public, and obviously the members also understand what exactly AI is and what's going on with it," Wilmeth said.

The committee will consider policy that makes AI safe and beneficial to use, Wilmeth said, but not overregulate or kill it.

The committee will work with industry leaders and the public to create informed and effective legislation that keeps Arizona competitive in the AI industry, Wilmeth said.
