The Human Rights Campaign Foundation estimates there are more than 2 million transgender people in the United States.

It’s being called the Protect Girls' Sports in Arizona Act.

Arizona state Rep. Selina Bliss, a Republican, said her resolution would create categories — including male, female or co-ed — based on a student athlete’s biological sex at birth.

Her measure — HCR 2003 — would also provide private spaces like bathrooms and changing rooms that could only be used by individuals of the sex designated for that space.

“The voters will decide on the ballot this fall if they want to give schools and athletic associations the opportunity for transparency and to set all children up for success. With this resolution, everyone gets to participate fairly and safely," Bliss said.

If the Legislature approves the resolution, it will go to voters in November.

The U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments this week about whether transgender girls and women should play on school sports teams.

Arizona’s own transgender athlete ban has been put on hold until the higher court rules.
