In the wake of the killing of two American citizens protesting in Minneapolis this month by ICE officers, Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Arizona) said Wednesday that he would vote against funding the Department of Homeland Security.
In a speech on the Senate floor, Kelly called for the resignations of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and President Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller.
The Democrat also referenced this week’s workplace raids on Phoenix-area sports bar chain Zipps and a video showing protesters being pepper sprayed.
"These are the actions of a rogue agency that is storming cities, violating the constitutional rights of Americans, and creating volatile situations where tragedies happen."
Senate Republicans are refusing to make any changes to the Homeland Security appropriations bill, raising the specter of a partial government shutdown by the end of the week.
