Tax season is upon us, and Democratic Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs says the tax forms currently available are safe to use and that people should feel confident filing now. But that appears to fly in the face of what the Department of Revenue told lawmakers just last week.
The agency said that roughly one-third of Arizona taxpayers might have to amend their returns if they use the existing forms.
But state revenue officials updated the guidance, saying most people should be OK using the current forms only if they take the standard deduction.
That’s because the current forms conform state tax law to the changes made by Congress last year in the "Big Beautiful Bill.''
But the forms don’t match the cuts proposed by the governor nor the ones being pushed by the Republican majority in the Legislature.
With no deal in sight, GOP lawmakers have scheduled a vote Wednesday on what they say would bring Arizona law into exact conformity with the feds — and with the tax forms available now.
