Phoenix leaders on Wednesday approved a $500,000 settlement of a medical malpractice lawsuit against the Fire Department.
Court records say a Phoenix fire crew responded to a September 2021 emergency call for a man experiencing chest pains, lightheadedness and shortness of breath as well as swollen legs and feet.
Upon examination, a complaint alleges that Fire Department personnel said the man was fine and to call his doctor the next day.
Instead, the man’s symptoms reportedly worsened. As his fiancé took him to a hospital, he stopped breathing.
Court records say he had a heart attack and catastrophic brain injury and was left permanently disabled.
