Sen. Mark Kelly and other Democratic lawmakers have introduced a bill on Capitol Hill that would lessen the tax burden for middle-class earners.
It would eliminate income taxes for anyone making under $46,000 a year, almost triple the current amount. And it would provide cuts for single filers who earn up to $80,000 a year.
Kelly says it would be paid for through progressively higher surtaxes on earners who make at least a million dollars.
"It’s not that hard work stopped mattering. It’s that hard work that middle class Americans do makes somebody else rich. The system is working, but it’s working for the wealthiest Americans," Kelly said.
The bill has been sent to the Republican-controlled Senate Committee on Finance.
