Tucson Unified School District students, teachers demand codified policy on ICE

After holding a community meeting last week to plan for ICE preparedness on campus, Pueblo High School students spoke up at Tuesday’s governing board meeting to demand more protections.

While agents have not yet entered school grounds, the Tucson Unified School District has provided mandatory training for staff on ICE preparedness. Students and teachers are now urging board members to include students in the training and to make a clearer stance on potential ICE activity.

Itza Esparza is a senior at Pueblo High School, which is located in southern Tucson. Esparza addressed the board Tuesday.

“There has been so much student work against ICE, but I don’t see the district helping much. I would appreciate more help,” she said.
