EPA granted a waiver to help lower gas prices. But Maricopa County air quality could worsen

The Environmental Protection Agency has granted a fuel waiver that will let Maricopa County sell fuel that isn’t the normal summertime clean blend.

The county’s Air Quality Department says that will likely increase carbon-based pollution.

The department said it is still too early to know how much pollution could worsen as that will depend on specific weather patterns and whether the 20-day waiver period will be extended.

The EPA normally requires the county to switch to a gasoline blend that is less likely to evaporate and send VOCs into the atmosphere when temperatures are at their highest in the Valley. But it’s more expensive.

The EPA waiver comes as fuel prices have skyrocketed due to the Iran war.
