The Arizona House has passed a bill that would prohibit any adjustment in a person’s probation following the conviction of a “dangerous crime against children.” That applies to certain crimes against a child 15 and younger.

Republican Rep. Nick Kupper says this bill would crack down on the kind of sentencing that enables offenders to game the system.

"There’s a scenario right now playing out in court where a convicted sex offender of children, a child molester, chose to have a sweetheart deal, where he served a very short period in prison in return for lifetime probation. That’s the deal," Kupper said.

The bill includes various crimes and offences including second degree murder, sexual assault or abuse and sex trafficking. The measure now goes back to the Senate.
