A caregiver at a Mesa assisted living community is accused of sexually abusing a resident living with dementia — and police say it was caught on camera by the woman’s daughter.

Police say Gamacy Gilles, 46, was arrested April 19 at Grand Court Senior Living near Mesa Drive and Brown Road after the woman's daughter contacted police.

Gilles is facing several charges, including sexual abuse and abuse of a vulnerable adult, according to court documents. Gilles denied the allegations when questioned by police.

Separately, lawmakers are considering a measure that would prevent assisted living facilities from prohibiting families from installing video cameras in their loved one's rooms.

Rep. Walt Blackman (R-Snowflake) voted yes on the bill.

“We may be in one of these homes. You don't know. Imagine yourself in one of these homes, and you can't speak to protect yourself, and somebody comes in there and abuses you," said Blackman.

Similar measures have failed in the past, and some long-term care facilities already do allow cameras.

Opponents say they are primarily concerned about government overreach and resident privacy.
