The Glendale City Council expelled one of their own at a legislative hearing on Thursday after he offered to resign from another elected role on the SRP board.
Public comments took an hour of the 90-minute meeting. Among those who spoke in favor of former Councilmember Lupe Conchas were three state lawmakers.
At issue was the city charter’s provision against getting paid for holding another public office. Conchas said he checked to see if it would be a problem.
“I did my due diligence. I made sure that I wouldn't be put in this situation so that you wouldn’t be put in this situation today. Yet here we are,” Conchas said. “And I understand, I know, that a lot of you are frustrated with me and are tired of me. But just because of that does not mean that we can expel me today.”
After a motion to table failed, council members voted 4-3 to expel Conchas.
Mayor Jerry Weiers voted in favor, but did not comment until it was time to adjourn, when he described the hearing as very, very difficult.
