Arizona Congressman Abe Hamadeh introduced legislation this week that would grant fuel discounts to veterans and military families.
The bill would allow the secretary of defense to apply discounts to federal fuel tax rates. It would also require the secretary to send a report to lawmakers after 180 days, with an update on the program and a recommendation on whether it should continue.
“This discount, equal to the federal fuel tax, shows profound gratitude to our nation’s heroes who have borne the heavy costs of war defending our freedoms,” Hamadeh said in a statement.
Hamadeh is a Republican and former intelligence officer in the Army.
He did not respond to a request for comment.
A handful of Democratic and Republican congressmen joined on as co-sponsors to the bill, which was assigned to the House Armed Services Committee.
