The Arizona Legislature has passed a bill that would require parental consent for public school employees to call a student by a different name or pronouns than what is listed on their birth certificate.
Arizona Republicans have passed similar bills in recent years that have all been vetoed by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs.
While supporters have said the change would keep parents informed, Democratic Rep. Lorena Austin said it could harm the students themselves.
“To make this assumption that we can just ignore the students that are gravely affected by this, it makes me think that there were no conversations with young people that experienced some very harsh realities," Austin said.
The House recently passed other gender-related bills, including one that would make medical transitions illegal for minors.
