U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement plans to open an office in Flagstaff. Local officials say they don’t know what operations will take place there.
ICE secured private office space, which did not require local approval. ICE told the city the purpose of the office is to expand enforcement efforts across the state, according to a statement from the city.
Flagstaff officials say they have not received a request from ICE to use city property. If it does, the city will have to follow new rules for federal use of local property, which it passed in March.
The new directive says the city would have to provide notice if ICE agents plan to visit a city workplace as well as a form for community members to report concerns.
Federal or nonprofit agencies must receive approval to use city property and cannot disrupt local operations, public health or safety.
