Arizona's revamped air quality flag program is working, Department of Environmental Quality says

A green triangular flag that had the word 'good' printed on it, along with ADEQ's logo, is seen with a sunny sky and slight lens flair in the background. It appears to be taken at a playground or park.

For roughly 17 years, Arizona's Department of Environmental Quality has sustained its Air Quality Flag Program.

Arizona’s dry winter can cause pollution to settle in, and possible health issues.

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has recently revamped an awareness program where organizations like schools can display color-coded flags to help communicate that day’s air quality forecast.

Michael Graves says they recently visited a participating elementary school in Glendale.

“The school nurse there told us that she saw a noticeable decrease in the number of visits to her nurse office from students with asthma," Graves said. "So students that have respiratory disease, who are extra sensitive to pollution can change their routines in their day to protect [their] health.”

The program now offers both physical and digital flags.
