One of three recipients of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry started much of his recognized work as a professor at Arizona State University in the 1990s.

Omar M. Yaghi shared the prize with two other chemists for the development of what are called metal-organic frameworks.

Those are molecules that have big spaces inside of them.

The Nobel Committee for Chemistry says that means they can be used to make materials that can harvest water from desert air, capture carbon dioxide or store toxic gases.

ASU President Michael Crow says it's the first time the prize in chemistry has stemmed from discoveries in Arizona.

Yaghi is currently a professor at UC Berkley.
