Researchers at the Mayo Clinic and Arizona State University have developed a rapid test to detect Valley Fever in patients.

The fungal infection — which spreads through spores in dust in the air — can be life-threatening, and is often misdiagnosed. The new blood test can detect the virus in just 10 minutes.

Dr. Thomas Grys has been researching the test for more than 14 years.

"The median time to diagnosis is 23 days, so half of the people take more than 23 days to find out they have Valley fever," Grys said.

Grys said patients will be able to find out their test results in the same visit. Developers expect the test to receive FDA approval in the coming months.
