Arizona is entering the height of its wildfire season. If you are planning any camping trips this holiday weekend, be sure to review campfire rules ahead of time.

"We will have pretty much all of Arizona in restrictions with the exception of southern/southeastern Arizona," said Tiffany Davila with the Department of Forestry and Fire Management.

Activities that could contribute to human-caused wildfires are prohibited. These include smoking, welding or using a torch outdoors, and discharging a firearm without a permit.

Parts of the state have entered emergency stage 1 fire restrictions. Certain activities are now restricted within state trust lands in Gila, Maricopa and Pinal counties, as well as the Tonto National Forest.

“There’s no smoking outdoors, no tool usage that involves flames, and then of course, there’s no target shooting and there’s no fireworks at any time of the year allowed on state trust land,” Davila said.

Campfires in those areas are banned, beyond fire pits maintained by the Fire Service. Restrictions will remain in effect until officials determine the wildfire risk is reduced, which could be anywhere from a few months to late fall, according to Davila.

All campfires, even in designated areas, are prohibited in La Paz and Yuma counties.

Violators could face hefty fines or prison time.
