Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport may be the site of a potential measles exposure after Maricopa County confirmed its 16th case this year.
The infected person was at Terminal 4 in the early morning of June 17, according to the health department.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Staab said this number of cases is not normal.
“The risk has changed. This is no longer only an infection that is imported from overseas, people are acquiring measles here in many places in the U.S. and here in Maricopa County,” Staab said.
Staab said previous years only show an average of one case annually.
“For those who have chosen not to be vaccinated themselves or to not vaccinate their children, now is really a time to reconsider that choice, because again the risk has changed,” Staab said.
Staab said 2026 marks a shift in how measles is being spread across the county.
