ASU researchers to lead team that wants to build AI to improve grid reliability, operations

An ASU-led research team is among the first group of applicants to receive funding under the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The team will study how artificial intelligence can improve grid reliability in the state and elsewhere.

The team will include researchers at ASU’s College of Global Futures, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Pennsylvania State University and University of California, San Diego. Together, they will build an AI that can rapidly assess various stressors on the energy grid, such as changes in demand or extreme weather, and offer solutions for grid operators.

Working with the operators themselves, the researchers believe the AI could offer tools that are better than traditional models for maintaining grid reliability and lowering energy costs, according to an ASU News release.

The Department of Energy launched its Genesis Mission last November. A statement on DOE’s website says it will “harness the current AI and advanced computing revolution to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within a decade.”

More than $800 in research commitments were announced at the inaugural Genesis Mission Summit on Wednesday. 

Five research projects at the University of Arizona were also selected.
