Arizona has seen more than 300 candida auris cases since 2022.
Eleana Acosta Zavala, an epidemiologist with the Pima County Health Department, says cases jumped from 31 in 2024 to 59 in 2025 in the county.
“Candida auris can spread through contact with affected patients and also with contaminated surfaces or equipment around the affected patient,” she said.
She says there is not a common set of symptoms like you might see with a cold for flu.
“Since it can cause infection in different parts of the body, like the blood or wounds and ears, then the symptoms of candida auris infection then really depend on the location,” she said.
Acosta Zavala says infection can spread through contact with affected patients or contaminated surfaces. She says hand washing is the best way to prevent infection.
