When most of us think of Tempe Beach Park, we think of the Town Lake that’s the center point of it all today. In 1999, city leaders dammed up the often dry Salt River, and added water to create the lake, which now is a major attraction.

But the park that surrounds it has been around for a whole lot longer than that.

Kathy Montgomery dug into the history of Tempe Beach Park in a recent piece for Arizona Highways titled “Summers at the Beach” and tapped into the nostalgia that surrounds the century-old gathering place. She spoke with The Show more about it.
