John D’Emilio has been studying LGBTQ+ history for about as long as it’s existed as an academic discipline — which isn’t that long.
Because many queer people had to live in secret for such an extended period in America, the field didn’t really come into its own until relatively recently.
But now that it has, D’Emilio sees queer history as an illuminating lens through which to view American history more broadly.
D'Emilio will be visiting Arizona State University on this Thursday to give a talk about the evolving presence of queer people in American life. His research stretches back into the many decades before mainstream visibility for LGBTQ+ Americans.
Among other things, he told The Show, gay men played a critical role in World War II. And the war, in turn, played a critical role in their lives.
