If the (slight) change in temperature has you in a hygge mood or current times have you wanting to be under a blanket, you are not alone. But first, do yourself a favor and grab a book.
This fall, The Show hosts have had a series of conversations with authors about their recent projects — from a former Arizona health director’s life stories to a Mexican-American Romeo and Juliet set in a Phoenix neighborhood.
There’s no shortage of books to peel open this season, but here are a few starting points:
-
Author Rick López explores the historical connections between politics and Mexico's natural world in his book "Rooted in Place."
-
Nathalie Cooke, an English professor at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, is author of the new book "Tastes and Traditions: A Journey through Menu History."
-
Mathew Sandoval is a teaching professor at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University and author of "Día de los Muertos: A Chicano Arts Legacy."
-
River Selby had a tough time in their teenage years. But that started to change once they decided to give wildland fire fighting a chance.
-
"Now We Are Here" follows 16 migrant families from Brazil, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, as their kids try to adjust to life in schools after their families arrive in the U.S.
-
Anyone who grew up here in the Valley in the 1990s might recall a memorable anti-smoking tagline, designed to gross you out: “Tobacco: the tumor-causing, teeth-staining, smelly puking habit.” The line was part of a campaign by Arizona’s health director at the time, Dr. Jack Dillenberg.
-
In her early 20s, Michelle Gurule was broke. One day, she was chatting with a fellow checker at the grocery store about being a stripper, and she decided to see if dancing could help her pay the bills. Not long after she started working at a club, an older man named John wandered in and invited her out for dinner.
-
“Rosa By Any Other Name” is a new novel by former Phoenix teacher Hailey Alcaraz, and it’s based on "Romeo and Juliet." The book is less re-telling than remix.
