The Chandler International Film Festival closes out this weekend, and one of the films on the docket comes from Arizona native Yvonne Huff Lee.

“Ownership” is Lee’s first film as a director — she’s also an actress, and plays the lead role in the film.

“Ownership” tells the story of a transformational day in the life of a Black real estate agent named Stella. Stella has a lifelong friendship with an older white woman named Betty Jean, a shut-in who lives in a grand, old house in the neighborhood, crammed with old artifacts and family heirlooms. Betty Jean and Stella have a warm, easy relationship — but on the day the film takes place, Betty Jean reveals a secret that upends their friendship.

The Show spoke with Yvonne Huff Lee about her experience of both directing and starring in the film.
